Banking

Modernising banking across East & Southern Africa.

Modernising a bank here means getting off a brittle legacy core safely — then earning the right to run AI on it. The banks that succeed sequence it: data and integration first, modular core next, AI on real operations last. Chatbots and “AI-first” platforms are not a strategy.

The landscape

Why banking modernisation stalls — and what unsticks it.

Most banks across the region sit between a stable legacy core and pressure to “do AI.” Buying a new platform or a chatbot rarely fixes the bottleneck: data quality, integration risk and change management.

The sequence that works is deliberate. Clean and migrate the data, modernise the core in phases, wire integrations the bank actually runs — then put AI on operations that already have owners and metrics. Each guide below is one step of that path, not a parallel slogan.

FAQ

Questions we get asked.

How long does a core-banking migration take?
For a mid-size bank or MFI, a phased migration typically runs 6–12 months: data cleansing and mapping first, parallel runs next, then a controlled cutover module by module. Big-bang cutovers are where most of the risk — and most of the failures — live.
Should African banks buy an AI-first core?
No. An “AI-first” label does not replace data readiness, integration and operational ownership. Sequence core modernisation first; AI follows on processes you already measure.
Where does banking AI pay back first?
In back-office and core-adjacent operations with clear owners — not vanity chatbots. If the core cannot expose clean events and data, the model will not save you.
Why prefer sovereign AI over generic LLMs?
Financial stability, residency and auditability. Generic public models are a weak fit for regulated decisions; domain-tuned, governable stacks reduce leakage of sensitive context and hallucination risk.
