Your customer already has your WhatsApp. What they may not have is your phone number on screen.
That is the quiet problem with WhatsApp usernames in Kenya. The feature was built so people could chat without handing over digits. For many small traders, the same digits are how orders, deliveries, and M-Pesa get finished when data dies or the seller steps away from the phone. Hide the number from new contacts, and the hand-off between WhatsApp and the rest of the mobile network breaks.
Kenyan press and local platforms have been full of the same story since the rollout: people set a username for privacy, then delete it when sales and reachability suffer. This is not nostalgia for the old way. It is last-mile commerce meeting a product designed for a different reality.
If your next customer cannot call you when you are offline, the username did not protect your privacy. It protected you from a sale.
What WhatsApp usernames actually do
WhatsApp's own rules are narrower than the hype:. Usernames are optional. You still need a phone number to own an account. People who already saved your number still see the contact name and the number. People who never saved your number see only the username (for example, @YourShop). Deleting the username puts the number back in those chats and calls. There is no public directory. Someone must know the exact username to find you. An optional username key can further gate who messages you first. WhatsApp holds a deleted username for 14 days so you can reclaim it. Phone numbers are not going away.
The trap is simple. The username hides the number only from new people. Those are often the exact people a trader most needs to reach by any channel: voice call, SMS, or M-Pesa.
Why Kenyan traders are reversing the switch
Reports from Kenyan outlets in mid-October 2026 (Tuko, Mpasho, Bizna Kenya and others) and open discussion on local social platforms keep returning to the same friction:
- A buyer sees only @Something and cannot place a normal voice call when the seller is offline or out of data.
- Delivery riders and payment follow-ups stall because there is no fallback number.
- M-Pesa and "Lipa na M-Pesa" still live on a reachable number outside the chat bubble.
- Most repeat customers already have the number, so the privacy gain is thin while the offline cost is immediate.
- Public-looking handles raise impersonation worries for businesses that run on trust.
Saved contacts are fine. The gap appears with new people who know only the username. For anyone whose revenue depends on that first or second contact connecting by any available channel, the gap is material.
WhatsApp Business vs personal accounts (this is where many SMEs get caught)
On WhatsApp Business, the phone number still shows on the business profile even if a username is set. In chat, customers who never saved the number may still see the username. Many Kenyan traders, though, still run on ordinary personal WhatsApp. There the username behaves like any consumer account: new contacts lose the number on screen.
Support lines, KYC, and fraud teams at telcos and payment providers still treat the underlying phone number as the authoritative ID. A username that conceals it from new counterparties adds little to compliance and a lot to day-to-day friction.
Impersonation does not disappear because there is no directory. Look-alike handles can still show up in social-engineering attempts, especially when a business advertises a username on signage or social media without a clear verification path. Restoring number visibility does not remove that risk. It does give customers a second, network-level way to check they are talking to the right person.
How to delete your WhatsApp username (iPhone and Android)
Four taps. Same path once the option is on your account:
- Open WhatsApp. Go to Settings, or tap your profile photo.
- Tap near your profile photo, or go to Account, then Username.
- Choose Delete username and confirm.
- Your phone number becomes visible again to people who previously saw only the username.
You can create a new username later. If you still want that specific handle, reclaim it inside the 14-day window.
Forward this checklist to any trader, rider, or side-hustle contact who set a username and then went quiet when customers could not call.
Who should keep a username
Keep it if:. Almost all of your chats are with new people and you genuinely need to hide your number. You join groups with strangers and prefer not to share digits. You deliberately match an Instagram or Facebook handle and offline fallback is not how you get paid.
Delete it if:. Customers need to reach you by ordinary call or SMS when WhatsApp data fails. Deliveries and M-Pesa confirmations still depend on a visible number. Your number is already on a shop sign, receipt, website, or social bio.
For most Kenyan traders and service providers whose work crosses from WhatsApp into voice, SMS, and M-Pesa, the clearer position is this: when offline reachability matters more than stranger privacy, delete the username.
